roupie

rupee

noun roo-PEE Rare

Origin: Hindi 'rupiya', from Sanskrit 'rupya' (wrought silver)

Usage Note

Roupie is the French name for the rupee, the currency of India, Pakistan, Nepal, and several other South Asian countries. In older French slang, roupie de sansonnet (starling's snot) was an idiom for something worthless — though this usage is now dated.
