Terrain has a broad range: a plot of land, a sports field, or the (military) terrain. Sur le terrain ('in the field', 'on the ground') is used in military, business, and journalism contexts to mean practical, real-world experience. Gagner du terrain means to gain ground, both literally and figuratively.
