Usage Note

Alpin describes anything of or relating to high mountains, particularly the Alps. The feminine form is alpine, as in ski alpin (alpine skiing) versus ski de fond (cross-country skiing). In French military jargon, les chasseurs alpins are the elite mountain infantry units.
