altitude specifically denotes height above sea level, distinguishing it from hauteur (general height) or élévation (elevation). Pilots and mountain climbers use it constantly: prendre de l'altitude (to gain altitude). Le mal des montagnes (altitude sickness) is sometimes called le mal d'altitude.
