tarif

rate, price, tariff

noun tah-REEF Rare

Origin: from Arabic 'ta'rif' (notification, price list), via Italian 'tariffa'

Usage Note

Tarif refers to an official or listed price — a tarif réduit is a reduced rate (e.g. for students), and plein tarif means full price. It differs from prix (general 'price') in implying a schedule or official rate. C'est le tarif can idiomatically mean 'that's the going rate' or 'that's what you get' (accepting a consequence).

Examples

"Quel est le tarif pour les étudiants?"
