safari

noun sah-fah-REE Rare

Origin: From Swahili/Arabic 'safar' (journey, travel).

Usage Note

Safari entered French from English but has the same Swahili origin. It is used both for wildlife-watching expeditions in Africa and, in fashion, for the loose khaki style (veste safari, tenue safari). The word is invariable in the plural: des safaris. A parc safari in France is a drive-through wildlife park.
