Usage Note

Absenter is almost exclusively used reflexively as s'absenter — you cannot 'absenter' someone else. Je vais m'absenter quelques jours means 'I'll be away for a few days'. The related adjective absent and noun absence are far more frequently encountered and share the same Latin root absentem.
