Remporter literally means 'to carry back' but in modern usage primarily means to win a prize, victory, or success: remporter un trophée, remporter les élections. It implies carrying off something earned, making it more triumphant in tone than the plain gagner. The literal 'carry back' sense (remporter ses affaires, to take one's things back) still exists but is less common.
