adonner

devote oneself (to)

verb ah-doh-NEH Rare

Usage Note

Adonner is almost always used reflexively as s'adonner à, meaning to devote oneself to or to take up a habit or activity: s'adonner à la peinture ('to take up painting'), s'adonner à la boisson ('to take to drink'). The non-reflexive form is archaic. It carries a sense of habitual or passionate engagement.

Examples

"Il s'adonne à la musique chaque soir."

Natural Translation

He devotes himself to music every evening.
