Usage Note

Entaille refers to a cut or notch made deliberately or accidentally — in wood (une entaille dans le bois), on a blade, or in flesh. The verb is entailler ('to notch, to gash'). It is more specific than coupure (a simple cut) in implying depth and a deliberately carved or jagged shape.
