Usage Note
Dédaigner expresses active contempt or dismissiveness toward something or someone. It is commonly followed by de + infinitive (il ne dédaigne pas de plaisanter = 'he doesn't disdain a joke'). The related noun is dédain ('disdain') and the adjective dédaigneux ('disdainful').
