Usage Note

affecter has two main senses: to have an emotional or practical impact on something (la nouvelle l'a affecté, the news affected him), and to assign someone to a post (il a été affecté à Lyon, he was posted to Lyon). The second sense is common in administrative and military French. The adjective affecté can also mean affected or put-on (in manner).
