Étriper literally means to remove the entrails of an animal or person, but it is very frequently used in colloquial French in the reflexive form s'étriper to mean two people fighting viciously or tearing into each other, often metaphorically. Ils se sont étripés lors du débat means they had a ferocious argument during the debate.
