Usage Note

Épuiser describes both physical exhaustion (le travail l'a épuisé = the work wore him out) and depleting a supply (épuiser les stocks). The adjective épuisé means 'exhausted' or, for books, 'out of print'. The noun épuisement means 'exhaustion' or 'depletion'. The reflexive s'épuiser means 'to tire oneself out'.
