Urne covers both the ceremonial urn used to hold ashes after cremation and the ballot box (urne électorale) used in French elections. On election day, the phrase aller aux urnes (to go to the polls) is extremely common in political journalism. The plural urnes is standard and follows regular feminine patterns.
