Tromper means to deceive someone, and se tromper (reflexive) means 'to be mistaken' — a crucial distinction. Il m'a trompé means 'he deceived me', while je me suis trompé means 'I made a mistake'. In a romantic context, tromper son partenaire means 'to cheat on one's partner'.
