Usage Note

Roter is informal but widely understood — more polite alternatives include éructer (formal/medical) or the noun un rot for the burp itself. In French culture, burping at the table is considered impolite, unlike in some other cultures. The expression lâcher un rot ('let out a burp') is common in casual speech.
