quitter

to leave

verb kee-TAY Common

Also means

to quit

Usage Note

Quitter requires a direct object — you quitter a person or place (quitter la maison, quitter quelqu'un). To say 'don't hang up' on the phone, French speakers say ne quittez pas. Do not confuse with partir, which is intransitive ('to depart').

Examples

"Elle a quitté la ville hier soir."

She left the city last night.
