police

police

noun poh-LEES Common

Usage Note

Police in French refers to the institution or force, not an individual officer — for that, use policier (m) or policière (f), or informally flic. A false friend: English 'policy' is politique or règlement in French, not police. Police d'assurance does mean 'insurance policy,' however.

Examples

"La police est en chemin."

Natural Translation

The police are on the way.

Literal Translation

The police is on the way.
