Usage Note

Acquitter has two main uses: legal (acquitter un accusé = to acquit a defendant) and financial (acquitter une dette = to pay off a debt). The reflexive s'acquitter de means to fulfil an obligation (s'acquitter de ses devoirs = to discharge one's duties). The noun acquittement covers both acquittal and payment.
