Usage Note

Amende is the standard word for a legal or administrative fine: une amende de cent euros (a hundred-euro fine), payer une amende (to pay a fine). Do not confuse it with amande (almond) — same pronunciation, different spelling. The phrase faire amende honorable means to make a public apology or retraction.
