Nouer is used both literally, for tying knots or scarves, and figuratively. Nouer des liens ('to forge ties') and nouer une amitié ('to strike up a friendship') are common fixed expressions. A related adjective, noué, can describe a stomach knotted with anxiety — avoir la gorge nouée means to have a lump in one's throat.
