Usage Note
Notre-Dame literally means 'Our Lady' and refers most famously to the Gothic cathedral in Paris, but the name designates hundreds of churches across the French-speaking world. The cathedral suffered a major fire in April 2019 and was reopened after restoration in December 2024. The phrase Notre-Dame de Paris is also the title of Victor Hugo's 1831 novel.
