Usage Note

Longer means to travel or extend along the length of something, such as a road running alongside a river. It is a regular -er verb. A common collocation is longer la côte ('to hug the coast'). Do not confuse with allonger ('to lengthen/stretch').

"La route longe la rivière sur dix kilomètres."

Natural Translation

The road runs alongside the river for ten kilometres.
