Usage Note
Lettre means both a written letter (correspondence) and a letter of the alphabet. The expression à la lettre or au pied de la lettre means 'to the letter / literally.' In the plural, les lettres also refers to literature or the humanities, as in faculté des lettres ('faculty of arts').
