jury

jury

noun zhoo-REE Less Common

Usage Note

Jury is borrowed from English/Anglo-Norman and is used for both a legal jury and a panel of judges at a competition, exam, or awards ceremony. Unlike in English, jury in French is treated as singular, so you say le jury a décidé not 'have decided.'

Examples

"Le jury a rendu son verdict."

Natural Translation

The jury delivered its verdict.
