Image is feminine and covers illustrations, mental images, and metaphors alike. Sage comme une image ('as good as a picture') is a common idiom meaning a child is very well-behaved. In figurative language, une image also refers to a figure of speech or simile, as in parler par images ('to speak in metaphors').
