Gonfler literally means to pump up a tyre, balloon, or similar object; colloquially it means to irritate or get on someone's nerves, as in tu me gonfles ('you're getting on my nerves'). The adjective gonflé can also mean 'cheeky' or 'daring'. The opposite of the literal sense is dégonfler.
