Usage Note

Gamin is an informal, affectionate word for a child or young person. The feminine form is gamine. It can also be used as an adjective meaning boyish or impish: un sourire gamin ('a mischievous grin'). The word entered English as 'gamine' to describe a waif-like, playful quality, especially applied to women.
