Usage Note

Adopté is the past participle of adopter used as an adjective. Un enfant adopté is an adopted child; une fille adoptée is an adopted daughter. The noun adopté(e) can also mean 'adoptee'. The process is l'adoption and the parents are les parents adoptifs (not adoptés).
