Usage Note
Fresque refers to a wall painting made on wet plaster, as well as any large-scale mural. By extension it describes an ambitious, panoramic narrative work — a novel or film covering generations is called une fresque historique (a historical saga). The Sistine Chapel ceiling is often cited as the world's most famous fresque.
