Usage Note
Figuier is the tree; the fruit it produces is la figue (fig). The parable of the fig tree (la parabole du figuier) is well-known in French religious and literary culture. Feuille de figuier ('fig leaf') is used both literally and in the expression for something that superficially covers a problem or embarrassment, mirroring the English idiom.
