bleuet

cornflower

noun bluh-EH Rare

Also means

blueberry (Quebec)

Usage Note

Bleuet means 'cornflower' (Centaurea cyanus) in European French, where it is also a national symbol of remembrance for fallen soldiers. In Quebec French, however, bleuet means 'blueberry' — the European equivalent is myrtille. This regional divergence is a classic false friend between the two varieties.

Examples

"Le bleuet est la fleur des campagnes françaises."

Natural Translation

The cornflower is the flower of the French countryside.
