Usage Note

Fantôme carries a circumflex on the o that was historically followed by an s (cf. English 'phantom'). It is used both literally for a ghost and figuratively, as in ville fantôme (ghost town) or entreprise fantôme (shell company). The adjective fantomatique means ghostly.
