Embarquer originally means to board a ship or aircraft (embarquer à bord = to board). In informal French embarquer quelqu'un means to drag someone into something (il m'a embarqué dans cette histoire = he got me mixed up in this affair). The noun is l'embarquement (boarding). The opposite is débarquer.
