Usage Note
Défenseur applies in both legal contexts (defence counsel) and general ones (a defender of a cause or a sports player in a defensive position). The feminine défenseuse exists but défenseure is also used, especially in legal/official contexts — both are accepted. The phrase défenseur des droits is the title of France's independent civil-rights ombudsman institution.
