Usage Note

Débarquement is used for both troops landing on a beach and passengers disembarking from a ship or plane. Le Débarquement (capitalised) refers specifically to the D-Day Allied landings of 1944 in Normandy. The verb is débarquer, which informally also means 'to show up uninvited'.
