Usage Note
Commettre is used almost exclusively with wrongs — crimes, mistakes, blunders, or sins: commettre une erreur, commettre un meurtre. It is conjugated like mettre (irregular). You would not use it for a positive commitment; that idea uses s'engager instead.
Examples
"Il a commis une grave erreur."
Natural Translation
He committed a serious mistake.
