Usage Note
Colocataire is the formal term; the colloquial abbreviation coloc (invariable) is extremely common in everyday speech, especially among students. The shared housing arrangement is la colocation (often shortened to la coloc). The word is gender-neutral in form, though une colocataire (feminine article) marks a woman.
