Usage Note

Casse-croûte literally means 'break-crust' and refers to a quick snack eaten outside a formal meal setting, such as a sandwich or a bite taken during a work break. It is invariable in the plural (des casse-croûte or des casse-croûtes). In Quebec French it also commonly refers to a snack bar or roadside diner.
