Usage Note
Cap refers to a geographic cape (le Cap Nord) and also to a nautical or figurative heading or course: changer de cap means to change direction. The idiom mettre le cap sur (to set course for) is used both literally at sea and figuratively for goals. It does not mean the clothing item 'cap' in French, which is une casquette.
Examples
"Le bateau a changé de cap vers le sud."
Natural Translation
The boat changed course towards the south.
