Usage Note
alcoolique functions as both a noun ('an alcoholic') and an adjective ('alcoholic', describing a drink or a person). As a medical/social term it is the standard word; ivrogne is a more pejorative older synonym. The adjective alcoolisé ('alcoholic' as in 'containing alcohol') is preferred when describing beverages, to avoid ambiguity.
Examples
"Il suit un traitement pour alcooliques."
Natural Translation
He is undergoing treatment for alcoholics.
