Usage Note

Économiser means to put money aside or to use less of a resource (économiser l'énergie, to save energy). The noun économie can mean both 'economy' and 'saving'; faire des économies is the common phrase for saving up money. It should not be confused with épargner, which is more formal for financial saving.
