Usage Note
Triste is the same form for masculine and feminine (il est triste / elle est triste). It can describe people, places, news, or situations. A related noun is tristesse (sadness), and the verb attrister means to sadden someone. Unlike malheureux (unhappy), triste tends to express a more transient or quiet sadness rather than deep unhappiness.
Examples
"Elle est triste depuis quelques jours."
Natural Translation
She has been sad for a few days.
