Usage Note

Trauma is an informal/medical borrowing alongside the more formal traumatisme. In everyday French, trauma is widely used in psychological contexts: un trauma d'enfance ('a childhood trauma'). The related verb traumatiser means 'to traumatize', and traumatisant ('traumatizing') is a common adjective. The plural is traumas in informal use.
