tragique

tragic

adjective trah-ZHEEK Less Common

Origin: Greek tragikos (of tragedy)

Usage Note

Tragique does not change form for feminine (une fin tragique). It is both a literary term (related to la tragédie) and an everyday intensifier (c'est tragique = 'it's terrible'). The noun le tragique can mean 'the tragic element', and prendre les choses au tragique means 'to dramatise things'.

Examples

"La fin de ce film est vraiment tragique."

Natural Translation
