Usage Note

Torrent is used literally for a fast-flowing mountain stream and figuratively for an overwhelming flow — un torrent de larmes ('a flood of tears'), un torrent de paroles ('a torrent of words'). The final t is silent. The adjective torrentiel describes very heavy rain.
