Tigre is masculine; the female is une tigresse, which also informally describes a fierce or passionate woman. In finance, les tigres asiatiques (the Asian tigers) refers to the fast-growing East Asian economies. The idiom chevaucher le tigre (to ride the tiger) describes being committed to a dangerous course one cannot safely abandon.
