Usage Note

Animaux is the plural of animal; the singular ends in -al, which becomes -aux in the plural — a pattern shared by many French nouns (e.g. cheval -> chevaux). The phrase les droits des animaux ('animal rights') is commonly used in French media. In informal speech une bête is a near-synonym for a wild or farm animal.
