Tamponner derives from tampon ('stamp, pad, buffer'), and covers several senses: dabbing a wound with a cloth, stamping an official document, or in road contexts, colliding into — se faire tamponner ('to get rear-ended'). The noun tampon also names a hygiene product (tampon). Children may know jeu du tampon as a tag-like playground game.
